Life events and their association with changes in the frequency of transport use in a large UK sample

From a mobility biographies perspective, and in line with the habit discontinuities literature, consistency travel behaviours is context dependent as such, will be more amenable to change following changes that disrupt habitual behaviour. Using UK Household Longitudinal Study (UKHLS), large-scale, longitudinal, national survey, this study investigates associations between disruption (in form of life events transport specific events) frequency car, bus, train, bicycle use over two-year period. The analysis extends previous research area by considering for all purposes, not only commuting. Further, tested self-activation hypothesis through an interaction experiencing event environmental concern. results show residential relocation parenthood were associated significant mode use. Relocation showed most consistent pattern away from cycling, while consistently lower likelihood increasing these modes (except car), but no greater decreasing. Transport often accounted – example, obtaining driving license, changing number cars household, to/from urban settings had large although across modes. Overall, suggests different differentially susceptible events.
